A Time for Family
Written by Jim Worthington on December 23, 2018
Regardless of religious beliefs, the end of the calendar year marks a time for family get-togethers and plans for the future. This week’s blog will detour from the normal fare of technical estate and trust law and look at the importance of family.
Disputes during estates, especially among the rich and famous, make the news. In my opinion, they make the news because they are the exception rather than the norm. (Dog bites man is not news, but man bites dog is.)
I have been privileged to watch countless families pull together during tough times to make sure mom and dad are cared for. And, after mom and dad pass, more kids than not work together well to wind up their affairs quickly and without incident. I have seen working professionals visit their parents every single day. I have seen siblings with very different lifestyles work together to select pieces from the family silver to give as wedding gifts to the younger familymembers.I have seen children and grandchildren pay loving tributes to their parents and grandparents.
So, I will keep this post short and hope that each reader will put down that tablet or phoneand go spend some time with family.Happy Holidays!
